The Water Sports School of the Hanzehogeschool is part of the Institute of Sport Studies in Groningen and sits on the Hoornsemeer. This is not a public surf rental but a training institution: students learn to teach sailing and windsurfing here - how to instruct individuals and groups and keep people safe on and around the water.

The Hoornsemeer is a calm inland lake on the edge of the city, well suited to hands-on instructor training. The institute is based at the Willem-Alexander Sportcentrum on Zernikeplein.
