On the car-free North Sea island of Baltrum, the Ulli (Ulfert) Mammen kite and surf school has taught right on the beach for over 30 years. The spot in the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea has two faces depending on the tide: shallow, stand-up-deep water behind the sandbanks for clean learning conditions, and waves on the open side for advanced riders. Windsurfing is the backbone, with kitesurfing and SUP alongside. Courses follow VDWS guidelines, from a beginner course with theory and exam through to advanced and manoeuvre training.
