About this spot

Diani Beach lies around 30 km south of Mombasa on the Kenyan coast. The roughly 17 km stretch of white sand sits behind a fringing reef that produces clean flat water in both wind seasons. The Kaskazi from the north-east (December–March) is warm and very reliable: it switches on around 10am and holds at about 20 knots until sunset – flat conditions for the twin-tip. The Kusi from the south (June–September) is cooler and stronger, often 25 knots and up, bringing swell for wave riding.

When is the best time to visit Diani? December–March for steady flat water, June–September for more wind and waves. All spots are tide-dependent: low tide opens a large, shallow learning area, while high tide gives advanced riders waves and kickers at the reef.

Location

Insider tips

In the Kaskazi (Dec–Mar) steady 20 kn suit the twin-tip – mid-size kites usually fit. In the stronger Kusi go smaller and look for the wave at the reef. Use the big standing-depth area at low tide for practice.

⚠︎ Hazards

A large tidal range of up to 4 m at spring tides changes conditions sharply. The reef gets very shallow, especially up north on low spring tides – stay away from there.
