About this spot

Canggu lies northwest of Seminyak and packs several breaks into a short stretch – Batu Bolong, Old Man's, Echo Beach and Berawa. Unlike the cliff reefs of the Bukit, Canggu feels softer: the first metres run over sand as a beach break, with reef peaks further out. Batu Bolong is a long, forgiving A-frame with no rocks and a whitewater section – the beginner and longboard spot par excellence. Echo Beach, by contrast, breaks hard and often heavy over shallow, sharp reef and is for advanced surfers only.

When is the best time to visit Canggu? Surfable year-round, cleanest in the dry season (May–October) with east offshore. Batu Bolong works best on a mid to high tide, Echo Beach more on a mid to low.

Insider tips

Beginners and longboarders to Batu Bolong/Old Man's on mid to high tide. Echo Beach runs cleaner on mid to low tide – but watch for exposed reef. Get out early before the wind kicks in.

⚠︎ Hazards

Echo Beach and the outer reef peaks break over shallow, sharp reef – dangerous at low tide. Current is possible; the main breaks get very crowded at peak times.
