About this spot

Uluwatu sits on the southwest tip of the Bukit Peninsula in southern Bali and is a whole series of reef sections along one long left-hander: The Peak is the main take-off zone, a fast, hollow left that barrels on swell; the Racetrack inside runs as a longer, workable wall for carving; Outside Corner and The Bombie only fire on big to XXL swell. It breaks over sharp coral reef, and access is through the famous cave at the foot of the cliff.

When is the best time to visit Uluwatu? The dry season from May to October with east-southeast offshore delivers the best, cleanest waves – June to August are especially powerful. On a high tide the wave turns softer and more forgiving, on a low it gets hollow and fast. A spot for advanced and experienced surfers.

Location

Insider tips

High tide tames the wave (better for the less experienced), low tide makes it hollow and fast. Best setup: SW swell plus SE offshore. Paddle out early, before the wind and the crowds.

⚠︎ Hazards

Sharp, shallow coral reef and strong current; the reef partly dries at low tide. Entry and exit through the cave can be tricky on swell. Reef booties recommended.
