About this spot

Snapper Rocks in Coolangatta at the southern end of the Gold Coast is the starting point of the famous "Superbank": a sand-bypassing system at the Tweed River mouth moves sand onto this coast, creating an extremely long, fast right-hand point break in the right swell that can run through Rainbow Bay and Greenmount all the way to Kirra. The spot is a regular stop on the WSL Championship Tour and home to a strong local surf scene.

When is the best time to surf Snapper Rocks? From around February to June, cyclone and south-east swells bring the best waves. Light south to south-west wind, which is offshore here, is ideal. At around 22–26 °C the water is pleasant. For beginners and longboarders, the calmer sections further down the bay, such as Rainbow Bay or Greenmount in small swell, are better suited.

Insider tips

Respect line-up etiquette: priority goes to the surfer sitting deepest, and this is one of the most crowded line-ups in the world. Many enter by jumping off the rocks – watch how the locals time it first. It is emptier early in the morning. A rash vest protects you from the strong sun.

⚠︎ Hazards

Very crowded, with many experienced locals – drop-ins lead to conflicts and collisions. Entering over the rocks carries a risk of injury. The current along the Superbank is strong and constantly drags you down the bay. Experienced surfers only.

All information without guarantee. Please check locally whether kiting, windsurfing, winging or surfing is currently allowed here – protected areas, swimming zones and seasonal closures change. You go on the water at your own risk.
