Margaret River – Surfer's Point

About this spot

Surfer's Point sits near Prevelly in the southwest of Western Australia and is home to the WSL Margaret River Pro. The spot is made up of two main waves – Mainbreak and Southsides – each peeling left and right over reef. Mainbreak is a powerful, often big reef wave that shows its best form on a west-southwest groundswell with an easterly offshore wind. Groundswells from the Southern Ocean arrive almost year-round, which makes "Margies" one of the most consistent waves on the entire coast.

When is the best time for Margaret River? The classic big-wave season falls in the southern winter (May–September), when the heaviest swells land; cleaner, smaller days come in summer with offshore east wind. A spot for experienced surfers.

Location

Insider tips

Best conditions on a WSW groundswell with east offshore. Mainbreak for the bigger days, Southsides often a touch more approachable. Summer (February) brings more clean, smaller sessions.

⚠︎ Hazards

Heavy reef, powerful waves and strong current – hold-downs are possible. On big swell for very experienced surfers only. Western Australia is also shark territory.
