About this spot

La Gravière in Hossegor on the French Atlantic coast (Landes) is one of the best-known beach breaks in the world. Thanks to the Gouf de Capbreton submarine canyon, swell reaches the sandbanks here with great energy – resulting in powerful, hollow waves, often with a tube. This coast was a long-standing stop on the pro tour and is one of the centres of the European surf scene.

When is the best time to surf Hossegor? September to November: autumn swells from the west to north-west are powerful, light offshore easterly winds often blow in the morning, and the water is still warm from summer (around 18–20 °C). In summer the waves are smaller and the beaches crowded. La Gravière is not a beginner spot – other beaches in the region, where many schools operate, are better suited for learning.

Insider tips

Surf in the morning before the wind turns onshore. The sandbanks are constantly shifting – watch for a while before paddling out to see where the wave is breaking cleanly. Plan for a spare board, as breakages are not unusual here. In summer, swimming zones with no-surf rules apply; follow the lifeguard flags.

⚠︎ Hazards

Extremely powerful shorebreak and heavy waves over shallow sand – risk of injury from hitting the bottom. Strong rip currents (baïnes) pull seawards. Experienced surfers only, and even for them it is borderline in big swell.

All information without guarantee. Please check locally whether kiting, windsurfing, winging or surfing is currently allowed here – protected areas, swimming zones and seasonal closures change. You go on the water at your own risk.
