About this spot
Bay around 45 km south of La Paz in Baja California Sur, on the Sea of Cortez – the main winter kite area for the US scene. In winter several wind systems from north to northeast work together: a thermal "El Norte" that picks up on most days from late morning into the late afternoon at around 15–25 knots, plus stronger, gustier frontal winds of 25–40 knots with a westerly component. The water is wind-chopped.
When is the best time to visit La Ventana? October to mid-May, with the most reliable wind from November to March; around 80% of afternoons see wind. Because the conditions can be gusty and strong, this is a spot for advanced riders and wingfoilers.
Location
Insider tips
The thermal El Norte usually starts between 11:30 and 12:30 and runs until around 17:30 – mornings are often light. On frontal days with a westerly component it is strong and gusty: rig smaller. Frontal winds can bring 25–40 knots.
⚠︎ Hazards
Gusty frontal winds with a westerly component; take care with any offshore tendency. Wind often only from midday – mornings can be deceptively calm. Chop and power in the afternoon.
