About this spot
Bird Island Basin sits on the Laguna Madre within Padre Island National Seashore, south of Corpus Christi in South Texas. In the shelter of Padre Island a shallow, warm lagoon forms, with bay-side flats running hip-deep for hundreds of yards – a forgiving learning venue and at the same time a huge freestyle playground.
The wind comes mainly from the south and southeast, blowing trade-wind-like and steady across the lagoon in the main season from April to September. How windy is the Laguna Madre? Over the year strengths sit roughly between 5 and 25 mph, most reliable in spring and summer. The shallow standing water with little current or obstacles makes this one of the most-ridden flat-water venues in the USA – for beginners and freestylers alike. Note: access and launch rules can change, so check ahead.

Insider tips
The hip-deep flats on the bay side are ideal for first water starts and for freestyle. Check access and launch rules in the National Seashore ahead of time – the kite community has lost launches there in the past.
⚠︎ Hazards
Shallow standing water keeps it forgiving; chop builds at peak winds up to 25 mph. In the nature reserve, watch for nesting and restricted zones and for boat traffic at the ramp.
