About this spot
South Padre Island – Laguna Madre Flats is a kitesurf, wingfoil and windsurf spot in the United States. The Laguna Madre on the west side of South Padre Island is a flat-water area with ankle- to hip-deep water, ideal for learning. The South Flats are the flat-water spot closest to town; the wind there usually comes cross-offshore. Main season March to June, but the wind blows almost all year round, averaging around 18 mph. Kite wave riding on the Gulf side, reached via the jetties at the southern end of the island; local schools offer lessons and rental.
The spot works best with wind from SE, S, E; the windiest period is Mar–Jun. The water is mostly flat. It suits beginners, intermediates and advanced riders.
