About this spot
The Lagoon of Óbidos lies about 80 kilometres north of Lisbon, between Foz do Arelho and Bom Sucesso and near the medieval town of Óbidos. It is Portugal's largest lagoon: shallow brackish water with an open connection to the Atlantic, butter-flat and in places only waist-deep – exactly the right ground for your first metres on a kite.
The wind is the summer Nortada from the north/northwest, which the surrounding hills reinforce; the terrain accelerates it inside the lagoon, adding a few knots over the open sea. When does the Nortada kick in? Reliably from roughly May to the end of August. The standing water makes the lagoon the ideal learning and progression spot in central Portugal, while still serving advanced riders for flat-water and foil.

Insider tips
The waist-deep standing water for beginners is on the lagoon side. The Nortada builds in the afternoon and is often a few knots stronger inside the lagoon than at sea.
⚠︎ Hazards
In the bathing season (mid-June to mid-September) one side of the lagoon is closed to kiting – respect the marked zone. Otherwise low risk thanks to the shallow water.
