About this spot

Supertubos, south of Peniche, is considered one of the best beach-break waves in Europe: with the right swell a short, powerful and hollow wave breaks over sand – not for nothing is the spot a stop on the WSL Championship Tour (MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal). The Peniche peninsula has the big advantage that one side almost always works: Supertubos in the south, Baleal in the north.

When is the best time to surf Supertubos? Autumn and winter bring the powerful north-west swells, and September to November is regarded as the best period. Light offshore easterly wind in the morning is ideal; in summer the wind often swings to the north in the afternoon. Supertubos is no place for beginners – they will find more sheltered waves and plenty of surf schools in the bay of Baleal and on the beaches around Peniche.

Insider tips

Go out early: in the morning the wind is most likely offshore and the line-up still emptier. Check swell direction and tide – the sandbanks shift and the spot does not break equally well every day. In northerly wind, switch to the north side of the peninsula (Baleal). Water around 15–18 °C; a 4/3 wetsuit is standard from autumn to spring.

⚠︎ Hazards

Heavy, hollow waves with little water over the sand – wipeouts quickly hit the bottom here. Strong currents along the beach, especially in big swell. Experienced surfers only; respect right-of-way rules in the crowded line-up.

All information without guarantee. Please check locally whether kiting, windsurfing, winging or surfing is currently allowed here – protected areas, swimming zones and seasonal closures change. You go on the water at your own risk.
