About this spot

The North Sea beach at Zandvoort, near Amsterdam, is one of the busiest urban kite spots in northern Europe. A long, gently shelving sandy beach with plenty of room to rig and three official kite and windsurf zones.

Wind works in the sector from SSW to NNW (roughly 210 to 020 degrees); the prevailing direction is southwest, and it blows most reliably in September and October, while midsummer easterlies make it weak. Three offshore sandbar belts let the waves reform several times, with flatter sections in between – so the sea is choppy with a wave element. Do I need to watch the tide at Zandvoort? Yes: the range is small, but the current runs north on the flood and south on the ebb and can be hard work against you. Suits beginners and intermediates.

Insider tips

Check the tide and current direction before your session – going against the current quickly gets tiring. Schools and rental are at the beach pavilion on the south beach.

⚠︎ Hazards

A busy city beach with swimmers in summer – ride only in the designated kite zones. The tidal current can set you off course.
