About this spot
The Brouwersdam in the Dutch province of Zeeland separates the North Sea from the Brouwershavense Gat and ranks among the most visited kite and windsurf venues in the Netherlands. A classic North Sea wave rolls in on the sea side, kept to rarely more than a metre by a ring of sandbars some 5 km offshore, while the inner side holds sheltered flat water. The working winds are the North Sea westerlies, south-westerlies and north-westerlies, which arrive side to side-onshore and are usually steady and gust-free. South to south-east is offshore and best left to experienced riders.
When is the best time to visit the Brouwersdam? The dam is rideable on more than half the days of the year, with the main season running May to September when temperatures are kinder. Low tide brings the shallowest, flattest water; as the tide floods, the wave influence grows. It suits all levels – beginners stay on the inner flat water, wave riders work the sea side.

Insider tips
Parking lots P1 to P11 run along the dam – pick one according to wind direction so the wind sits side- or onshore. Catch low tide for flat water and the flooding tide for the wave. Kites of 7–10 m cover the typical west/south-west days.
⚠︎ Hazards
South to south-east wind is offshore – do not head out without backup. On the sea side, current and swell pick up on the flooding tide, and busy line-ups are common on strong onshore days.
