Dunkerque – Leffrinckoucke

About this spot
The long sandy beach between Dunkerque and Leffrinckoucke (Hauts-de-France) is the reference spot of the northern French North Sea coast. It is home to the Dunkerque Flysurfing Club (DFC), one of France's oldest and strongest kite clubs. At low tide the water uncovers for kilometres, giving a huge, barely crowded area to rig and launch.
The best conditions come with wind from west through northwest to northeast: on this north-facing beach they sit side- to side-onshore, the water is flat with a small North Sea chop. What is the best tide state? Low to mid water for maximum beach space; avoid high tide, when the beach almost disappears. Suitable for all levels, and especially relaxed for learners and foil sessions thanks to the wide-open space.

Insider tips
Low to mid tide offers the most beach – avoid high tide. West to northeast sit side- to side-onshore and are the reliable directions.
⚠︎ Hazards
Strong tidal range: at high tide the beach almost disappears entirely. In high summer (July/August) designated kite zones apply.
