About this spot
Camber Sands is a vast sandy beach backed by large dunes on the East Sussex–Kent border, just over an hour from south London and only about 8 km from Rye station. At low tide the sea uncovers huge sand flats and shallow lagoons that form behind the sandbars.
It's sailable in southerly directions – SE, S and SW all work. The day often starts with a light offshore breeze that turns and builds around midday, then holds into the evening; on average there are around four windy days a week year-round, with a main season of April to October. When is Camber flattest? A few hours either side of low water, when the lagoons sit behind the bars. That makes Camber a classic for beginner kiters and relaxed freeriding.
Location
Insider tips
The flattest lagoons appear a few hours either side of low water – check the tide table. Don't leave kit near the water, the flood comes back very fast.
⚠︎ Hazards
The tide floods very quickly and can cut off both kit and riders. The morning wind can be offshore – only safe once it turns around midday.
