Cape Town – Bloubergstrand / Big Bay
South Africa · Kitesurf · Windsurf · Wingfoil
About this spot
Cape Town's best-known kite spot, with the Table Mountain backdrop right in view. The "Cape Doctor" – a strong southeasterly – pours off Table Mountain and sweeps the bay almost daily during the South African summer; on a good day 18–30 knots is the average, with peaks well beyond. Big Bay is a small bay framed by rocks: ordered waves break out front with flatter water in between – ideal for big air, freestyle and wave. The water is wind-chopped and cool (Benguela Current, around 18–20°C).
When is the best time to visit Bloubergstrand? November to March, the high summer with the most consistent Cape Doctor. Because of the strong, gusty winds and the waves, this is a spot for advanced riders.

Insider tips
The Cape Doctor often starts lighter in the morning and builds in the afternoon – plan your day accordingly. Rig small at 25+ knots. A wetsuit is essential because of the cold Benguela water.
⚠︎ Hazards
Cold water (Benguela Current), strong and at times gusty southeasterly, and shore break at the rock edge. Sharks documented in the region. Take care with any offshore component or dropping wind.
