About this spot

Flat-water lagoon around 110 km north of Cape Town – one of the best flat-water areas anywhere. It catches the same southeasterly wind as Big Bay, but usually a touch lighter and across large, smooth areas, which makes Langebaan far more beginner-friendly. Close to the beach the water is choppy; further out, behind the island, it turns properly flat – the freestylers' terrain. The water is also warmer than at the Cape Town spots.

When is the best time to visit Langebaan? October to March, with December to March the strongest phase; the southeasterly then blows consistently between 15 and 40 knots. Suits beginners to pros, wingfoil and SUP.

Insider tips

Water is flattest at low and mid tide; at high tide it gets choppier. Head behind the island for smooth water. The sheltered, shallow bays are great for beginners and freestyle.

⚠︎ Hazards

A possible offshore tendency – if the wind drops you can drift far out onto the lagoon. Mind the tide, as the shallow and deep areas change a lot.
