About this spot

A long urban beach between Cascais and Lisbon, half an hour from the city by train. Carcavelos is an exposed beach break with sandbanks in front of the historic São Julião da Barra fortress, breaking both left and right. It picks up ground and wind swell from the west; the best days come when a west swell meets offshore north-to-northeast wind, producing clean, sometimes barrelling waves.

When is the best time to surf? The strongest, most reliable swells run October to March and suit experienced surfers; winter waves and currents are stronger. Summer brings smaller, forgiving waves – ideal for learning and relaxed sessions, often especially clean in July. Carcavelos is one of Portugal's most popular everyday and learning spots, with surf schools, rental and cafés right on the promenade.

Location

Insider tips

For the cleanest waves wait for a west swell with offshore N/NE wind. To learn, choose summer – smaller waves, warmer water, less current.

⚠︎ Hazards

Markedly stronger waves and currents in winter; beginners should only go out on small swell. Crowded on good days – mind right of way and board control.
