About this spot

The Tróia peninsula south of Lisbon, in the municipality of Grândola and near Comporta, separates the mouth of the Sado from the Atlantic and belongs to the Sado estuary nature reserve – home to flamingos, herons and the rare Sado dolphins. The result is a dual spot: flat, sheltered water on the Sado side, open waves on the Atlantic side.

The wind is most stable from south to southwest; the north wind (Nortada), by contrast, can be gusty and tricky here. In summer a thermal effect produces around 15 knots on almost every day, while the windiest period falls more in the off-season from autumn to spring. Who benefits most here? Intermediates and pros who want to switch between flat-water training in the estuary and wave riding on the open Atlantic.

Insider tips

South to southwest is the most stable wind – north wind is often gusty here. The summer thermal gives reliable but moderate 15 knots; for more power choose the off-season.

⚠︎ Hazards

Current at the Sado mouth – mind the tide and any offshore component. Open waves on the Atlantic side. Nature reserve: respect the wildlife protection zones.
