About this spot

Urban windsurf spot on the east coast of Lanzarote, on the map since the early 1990s: Las Cucharas hosted the PWA World Cup back then and remains a regular wave stop on the tour. The trade wind ("Los Alisios") blows from northeast between March and September, over 15 knots on more than 80 percent of days and mostly clean side-shore. Inside the bay the water is flat and protected; further out a reef produces waves to jump and ride.

Can you kite here? Las Cucharas itself is windsurf-only; kiters head to Famara on the northwest coast. The wind picks up around midday and shifts side-onshore – the stronger midday-to-evening hours suit advanced sailors, while mornings and late afternoons offer the cleanest wave riding. Costa Teguise has gear, schools and infrastructure right on the beach.

Insider tips

For clean waves go out early or late afternoon; the midday hours bring power and gusts for jumps. If you want to kite, head to nearby Famara.

⚠︎ Hazards

The reef off the bay creates waves, current and shallow sections – judge your position carefully. On competition and peak days the water can get crowded.
