Lanzarote – Famara
Spain · Wellenreiten
About this spot
Crescent-shaped bay on the northwest coast of Lanzarote with a sandy beach stretching for kilometres beneath the Risco de Famara massif, at Caleta de Famara – one of the most important wave spots in the Canaries. An exposed beach break with lefts and rights that picks up the North Atlantic NW swell well; best around 1–2 m wave height. It cleans up when an offshore wind from the southeast grooms the wave, while the regular trade wind here mostly blows from NE/E.
When is the best time to travel? Surfable year-round, biggest and most consistent in winter (December to February) when the Atlantic lows fire. Summer is often smaller and can go flat – then perfect for beginners at the surf schools near the village edge. The middle of the bay hoovers up the most swell.
Location
Insider tips
Beginners stay towards the village, where the surf schools are and the wave is smaller; the middle of the bay pulls the biggest swell. For clean waves look for offshore SE wind. At low tide the waves break shallower and foamier – good for learning.
⚠︎ Hazards
Strong currents and heavy shore break during winter swells. The beach break can build quickly – judge size and current honestly.
