About this spot

The Dakhla lagoon on the Atlantic coast of Western Sahara is one of the best flat-water spots in the world. A long peninsula shields the roughly 40-kilometre lagoon from Atlantic swell; at low tide huge areas of smooth, often standing-depth water appear. The wind blows very reliably from the north to north-east and is boosted thermally by the desert – on many days of the year it is enough for a medium or small kite.

When is the best time to visit Dakhla? Wind is most reliable from around March to October, strongest in summer. In winter it blows less often, but it is quieter. The water is cooler than you would expect in the desert (around 18–22 °C), so a wetsuit is needed. If you are looking for waves, there are also wave spots on the Atlantic side of the peninsula.

Insider tips

Most kiters stay in kite camps right on the lagoon – this saves journeys, as Dakhla town is a few kilometres away. Conditions depend heavily on the tide: it is flattest at low water. Only do downwinders through the lagoon with a support boat or organised by a camp. Wind and sun are intense, so apply sunscreen well even on cooler days.

⚠︎ Hazards

In strong wind, short waves build up even in the lagoon, and the gusts increase in the afternoon. Tidal currents in the lagoon channel can be strong. Avoid remote areas with no means of rescue and do not ride alone.
