About this spot

Pure Wadden Sea on the diked marsh island of Nordstrand – long sandbanks, tide and wide horizons, the home water of many Husum locals. In westerlies the peninsula delivers steady, slightly gusty wind; usable directions run from southwest to northeast. East wind can freshen strongly through thermal effects. You ride about two and a half to three hours before and after high water, much of it in shallow water. The spot at Holmer Siel offers the finest Halligen panorama. In summer the water reaches around 19–20 °C.

When is the best time to visit Nordstrand? The wind-reliable months of spring and autumn; in summer the water is at its warmest.

Location

Insider tips

A tide calendar is essential – usable around 2.5–3 h either side of high water. The Holmer Siel spot has the best Halligen panorama and long shallow water.

⚠︎ Hazards

Tidal channels are dangerous when the tide is going out. The flats hold lahnungen (rows of wooden poles) – take extra care on the ebb.
