About this spot

The Bay of Oyambre on the Cantabrian coast sits in a nature reserve of dunes and sandy beach around Cabo de Oyambre. The spot is tide-dependent: at low tide a wide flat-water area forms over the estuary mouth, while at high tide an Atlantic beach break runs, working best on northwest swell and cleanest around low water.

Riders sail and surf here on west to northwest wind, which strengthens thermally on sunny summer days; cross-onshore setups are typical. Is Oyambre worth it for wave riders? In winter the Atlantic delivers the most reliable waves, while summer is often flatter and better suited to flat-water and foil sessions. That makes Oyambre one of the most important all-round spots on Spain's northern coast – for beginners in the flats as much as for wave riders.

Insider tips

The tide table is everything here: low tide for the flat-water lagoon, water around low for the cleanest wave. Aim for NW swell for wave sessions.

⚠︎ Hazards

Cold Atlantic water – wetsuit mandatory. The tidal range changes the spot dramatically; mind the estuary current and waves at high tide.
