Leucate – La Franqui
France · Kitesurf · Windsurf · Wingfoil
About this spot
A beach at the foot of the Cap Leucate limestone cliffs, south of Narbonne on the French Mediterranean coast. La Franqui runs on the Tramontane – a cold northwest wind that drops from the Pyrenean foothills, accelerates across the lagoon and regularly tops 30 knots along this coast. The wind enters the spot cleanly and smooths the water surface; behind the beach there is also a shallow, not deep but spacious flat-water area for freestyle and jumps.
How often does it blow here? The Tramontane blows around 300 days a year, concentrated in winter and spring – making La Franqui one of Europe's most reliable strong-wind venues. Every spring the "Mondial du Vent" gathers the international elite for speed, freestyle, wing and windsurf competitions. The spot suits advanced kiters, windsurfers and wingfoilers after powerful, gusty wind and a large playing field.

Insider tips
The windiest weeks are often in winter and spring. Use the flat-water area behind the beach for freestyle; size down when the Tramontane is at full strength.
⚠︎ Hazards
The Tramontane is cold, gusty and can exceed 30 knots – choose kite size conservatively. Onshore components and strong gusts demand experience; not a beginner wind.
