Étang de Thau – Sète

About this spot
The Lagoon of Thau near Sète is, at around 7500 hectares, the largest inland body of water on the French Mediterranean coast. With no current, vast open spaces and shallow depth, it has become a fixed reference spot for the Occitania region – the wind blows here on roughly 200 days a year.
The dominant wind is the Tramontane from the northwest, which sweeps through generously and strong; flat water then builds up on the inner side. The Marin from the southeast is the second direction but less suited to this spot. Where is the best place to kite? At the Pont Levis on the Sète side, one of the top spots around Montpellier; a sandbank barrier called the "toc" runs through the lagoon, separating flat water from a choppier zone. Le Barrou on the southern bank is more of a windsurf and wing area. Rideable year-round, for all levels.

Insider tips
Pont Levis on the Sète side is the central kite spot; the "toc" sandbank separates flat water from the choppy zone. The Tramontane (NW) is the reliable wind.
⚠︎ Hazards
The Tramontane can blow very hard – choose your kite size conservatively. Little current in the lagoon, but long distances back to shore in strong wind.
