About this spot

Sagres at the far south-western tip of Portugal is one of the most reliable wave spots in Europe because two coastlines meet here: the west coast (e.g. Praia do Tonel, Amado further north) picks up almost every Atlantic swell, while the south coast (Beliche, Mareta, Martinhal, Zavial) is sheltered in the lee when the wind is northerly. Depending on wind and swell you simply drive a few minutes to the other side – so there is almost always a surfable wave.

When is the best time to surf Sagres? Autumn to spring brings the most consistent swells; in winter the west coast can get very big, and the south coast is then the right choice. In summer the waves are smaller and more beginner-friendly, and the water is warmest at around 18–20 °C. Many surf schools operate on the beaches around Sagres, and the south-coast bays also suit SUP when the swell is small.

Insider tips

Rule of thumb: north and north-west wind → south coast (Mareta, Beliche, Zavial); south and east wind or no wind → west coast (Tonel, Amado). Beliche is reached via a long staircase down to the beach. In summer the car parks at the well-known beaches fill up early. Beginners should go to Martinhal or Mareta in small swell, not to Tonel.

⚠︎ Hazards

The west coast is exposed: powerful waves, currents and rocks at the ends of the beaches. In big winter swell Tonel is for experienced surfers only. Keep away from the edges of the cliffs – they are crumbly.
