Alvor – Ria

About this spot
The Ria de Alvor between Lagos and Alvor on the western Algarve is a tide-dependent estuarine lagoon – a now-rare flat-water venue in Portugal with warm, clear water over a sandy bottom. Spread across the sandbanks, the water in the teaching area stays knee- to waist-deep. The working winds are west and north-west: in summer the Nortada thermal usually switches on between 1 and 2pm and takes the lagoon from calm to 15–25 knots within an hour, averaging 18–22 knots in peak season – often even when the coast further south barely has a breeze.
When is the best time to visit Alvor? April to October, with the most reliable Nortada in high summer. The best tidal window is mid-tide with weaker current; at high tide a large area opens up for independent riders. Ideal for beginners and wingfoilers.

Insider tips
A tide table is essential – at low tide the water largely retreats. Mid-tide offers low current and plenty of flat water; wait for the afternoon Nortada (from around 1–2pm).
⚠︎ Hazards
At low tide the lagoon largely dries out – without a tide table you risk getting stranded. Current can run in the channels between the sandbanks on a changing tide.
