About this spot

Tarifa on the Strait of Gibraltar is the southernmost point of mainland Europe and the kitesurfing capital of the continent. The strait between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean acts like a nozzle: either the warm, often gusty Levante blows from the east or the steadier, cooler Poniente from the west – there is enough wind on well over 300 days a year. The main beaches, Los Lances and Valdevaqueros, stretch for around ten kilometres, backed by a large number of schools, shops and beach bars.

When is the best time to visit Tarifa? June to September is the windiest and busiest period; spring and autumn also bring plenty of wind with fewer crowds and cheaper accommodation. In Poniente the water is usually calmer and the wind sideshore to side-onshore – the better choice for improvers. The Levante can reach 30 knots and more and blows side-offshore on many stretches; Valdevaqueros is then the usual fallback beach.

Insider tips

Arrive in the morning while there is still space on the beach – by the afternoon it gets crowded. In summer, swimming zones are cordoned off at Los Lances and kiting is only allowed in the marked corridors; ask locally or at a school where the zones are. In Levante, rig one size smaller than the average wind suggests – the gusts are the problem. Atlantic inflow keeps the water fresh even in summer, so a 3/2 wetsuit is usually right.

⚠︎ Hazards

Strong Levante blows side-offshore and can push you towards the open sea and the shipping lane of the strait – with gear failure this gets serious. The Levante is very gusty; above 35 knots keep clear of reef and rocky stretches. In summer the water is very crowded, so follow right-of-way rules strictly and keep away from swimmers.
