About this spot

Valdevaqueros is the big sandy beach about 9 km west of Tarifa towards Cádiz, the central kite beach of the Costa de la Luz and rideable year-round. Levante (easterly) accelerates through the Strait of Gibraltar and delivers 20–30 knots, sometimes more; the half-moon bay backed by the Punta Paloma dune is considered the safest choice in Levante because its shape stops you drifting fully offshore. Poniente (westerly) brings side-onshore conditions, choppier water and steadier wind – that's when you reach for bigger kites.

At spring tide a shallow lagoon forms at times; it needs the Levante from the right direction or it turns gusty. When is high season? Easter to August is busy, with the most consistent wind from May to October. In summer the riding area gets small, crowded and rocky – beginners are better off at the wider Los Lances then. Valdevaqueros shows its best for experienced riders in the quieter off-season.

Insider tips

In strong Levante avoid the exposed zones and respect the offshore risk – the Punta Paloma end is the safest. Poniente calls for bigger kites. In high summer arrive early, the beach gets tight. Watch for rocks along the shore and in the southern section.

⚠︎ Hazards

Levante is offshore and can become extremely gusty, especially in its first days as it funnels through the strait. Rocks along the shore and in the south, plus heavy crowds in high summer. Beginners should not go out alone in Levante.
