Viganj – Pelješac

About this spot
Viganj sits at the narrowest point of the Pelješac peninsula, where the channel between the mainland and the island of Korčula tightens into a natural wind funnel. This is Croatia's best-known windsurf area – a fixture in the scene since the 1989 World Championship and the 1990 Europeans.
The centrepiece is the thermal Maestral, which on warm summer days runs from west to northwest across the channel almost daily. It builds in the morning and is most reliable in the afternoon; around 30 km/h on average, considerably more on hot days. The water is mostly chop with no real wave. When does the wind blow strongest in Viganj? Usually between midday and early evening in the high-summer months of June to August.
In the morning and in lighter wind the bay is mellow enough for beginners, while afternoons deliver the power that advanced sailors and pros want. The pebble beach and several on-site centres make rigging and launching straightforward.

Insider tips
Plan sessions for the early afternoon when the Maestral reaches full strength. High summer (Jul–Aug) is statistically the most wind-reliable. The calm morning water suits beginners and SUP well.
⚠︎ Hazards
The bottom is pebble to gravel – water shoes are sensible. In a strong Maestral the wind has a side-offshore tendency; watch for boat traffic in the channel and avoid drifting too far toward Korčula.
