About this spot

Torbole lies at the northern end of Lake Garda between mountains rising to 2,000 metres, right next to Riva. The narrow northern basin produces two reliable thermal winds a day: the Pelér from the north, which builds from midnight and peaks between 8 and 11 AM at 12–20 knots, giving flat water off Torbole, and the Ora from the south-southwest, which sets in around noon and peaks between 2 and 5 PM with more chop. The spot has been a windsurf-scene icon since the 1980s.

This double-wind system makes Garda one of the most consistent windsurf venues anywhere, with 250-plus rideable days a year. When is the best time to visit Torbole? June to September for the strongest thermal winds, with June offering both – a reliable morning Pelér and a powerful afternoon Ora – before the high-summer crowds arrive. Beginners take the calmer morning Pelér, advanced riders the powered-up Ora.

Insider tips

North in the morning (Pelér, flat water, good for learning), south in the afternoon (Ora, choppier and stronger) – plan a daily strategy. June is the sweet spot: both winds reliable, fewer crowds than July/August.

⚠︎ Hazards

The Pelér can ramp up strongly in the morning and turn the northern basin cold and gusty – pick your gear accordingly. In high summer the water off Torbole gets crowded with surfers, foilers and SUPs during the Ora; keep your distance.
