About this spot
The Forggensee is a Lech reservoir in the Allgäu near Füssen, set against the backdrop of the royal castles. Its location in the alpine foreland shapes the wind: thermals usually rule, amplified by the surrounding mountains, while the foehn falls from the south out of the Alps and can reach storm force. Which wind is best on the Forggensee? In northeast wind the lake even offers conditions for advanced surfers; otherwise one to three wind forces make for ideal beginner conditions. When can you surf here? The lake reaches its highest level between 1 June and 15 October, when enough Lech water is held back – in winter it is drained down to a small residual lake. So it is surfable only in the summer season. Good for windsurfers, wingfoilers and SUP amid mountain scenery.
Location
Insider tips
Season summer only (peak level approx. 1 Jun–15 Oct). Northeast wind brings the best conditions, otherwise a calm beginner area. Foehn from the south brings strong wind – take care.
⚠︎ Hazards
The lake is drained in winter – not usable outside the season. In spring shallow zones (e.g. the bay east of the headland) lie very flat: catapult falls possible. Foehn can reach storm force; cold alpine water.
