About this spot

The Ammersee lies at around 500 m in the Upper Bavarian Pfaffenwinkel, some 16 km long and 5 km wide, and thanks to its closeness to Munich it is a classic for learning water sports. The prevailing wind comes from the west at 1–4 Beaufort, and with persistent high pressure in autumn also from the east. Which wind is best on the Ammersee? The reliable one is the thermal, which runs almost year-round and always blows from northeast to north – strong at 5–6 Bft in spring and autumn with big day-night swings, usually only 3–4 Bft in midsummer with warm nights. Surf stations sit in Utting and Dießen; Utting works especially well in east to southeast wind, which runs in freely across the Herrsching bay. Gentle chop, mountain panorama – good for beginners, freeriders, wingfoilers and SUP. Kitesurfing is not allowed on the Ammersee.
