About this spot

The Großer Brombachsee is a large reservoir in the Franconian Lake District between Nuremberg and Ingolstadt, surrounded by Spalt, Pleinfeld and Gunzenhausen, around 10 km long and 2–3 km wide. Its steady wind makes it a popular area for windsurfers and wingfoilers. When does the Brombachsee work best? Wind along the lake's length – east to west – has the clear advantage, running in freely across the whole surface; in summer high-pressure systems east of Germany often deliver stable easterly wind that is reinforced locally. Depending on direction there is a suitable entry: the Mitteldamm is the first choice in easterly wind, Ramsberg in the south works well from northwest to east. A surf and kite school offers courses for surf, SUP, wing and kite. A wide, calm surface with gentle chop – beginner-friendly for windsurf, wingfoil and SUP.

Insider tips

⚠︎ Hazards

In cross-wind the shore blocks individual spots – then less wind and lee holes. With offshore wind keep your distance from open water. Mind swimming areas and zones.
