About this spot
Bavaria's "sea" sits beneath an Alpine panorama and is one of southern Germany's largest areas. In summer thermal wind dominates, generated by the sun at midday and amplified by the Alps; alongside this, passing lows bring strong westerlies and in autumn the foehn from the south delivers real strong-wind days. When is the Chiemsee windiest? The best phases are spring and autumn – April to June and September to October – when low pressure and foehn are most reliable. For kiters, Chieming on the east side is the first choice in westerly wind: a marked spot, flat water, a wide pebble beach for launching and landing; Übersee often works better in southwest. Kitesurfing is strictly regulated and allowed only in the designated zones at Übersee/Chieming. For windsurfers, wingfoilers and SUP the lake spans beginner to pro.

Insider tips
Kite only in the Übersee/Chieming zones, otherwise kitesurfing is banned. Chieming for westerly wind, Übersee for southwest. Best season spring and autumn; keep at least two line lengths from shore.
⚠︎ Hazards
Foehn can become very strong and gusty – have an emergency plan and reckon with katabatic gusts off the mountains. Deep, cool alpine water, wetsuit recommended. Observe the kite zones and the spot supervisor's instructions.
