About this spot
Atins is a remote fishing village at the entrance to Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, in the delta of the Preguiças river. Between the Atlantic, the river and the dunes, kilometre-long flat-water zones form from sandbanks and lagoons. The trade wind blows steadily from east to southeast from June to January, side-onshore, typically 15–25 knots and all day long.
It blows strongest and most reliably from August/October to mid-December. A quirk of the place: an impermeable rock layer sits beneath the sand, so the freshwater lagoons are fullest between July and September before slowly drying out from mid-October. When is the best time to visit Atins? Roughly August to November, when full wind and full lagoons coincide. The standing-depth flat water suits every level, while the journey and the dune setting make it an adventure destination.

Insider tips
Side-onshore trade at 15–25 knots suits mid to smaller sizes; October to mid-December is strongest. The freshwater lagoons are fullest July to September – ideal flat-water sessions away from the sea. A 4x4 transfer or boat is needed; the village is sandy and remote.
⚠︎ Hazards
Tidal currents run through the delta between river and sea – keep distance and a buddy when there is an offshore component or on the open side. Sandbanks shift; local guides know the safe downwinders. Limited infrastructure and assistance on site.
