Bel Ombre – Pointe d'Esny
Mauritius · Kitesurf · Wellenreiten · Wingfoil
About this spot
Bel Ombre lies on the south coast of Mauritius, east of Le Morne, with Pointe d'Esny in the southeast near Blue Bay. Both spots follow the same pattern: a reef belt encloses a wide lagoon, so flat water stands across a large area inside while clean waves break on the reef edge. Pointe d'Esny is regarded as one of the island's most beautiful, best-preserved coral lagoons and is accessible to improvers too.
The wind is the southeast trade, standing side to side-onshore into the lagoons. When is the best time in Mauritius? The season runs from May to November (often from April) with a steady 15 to 25 knots. Bel Ombre is less crowded than Le Morne and suits advanced riders wanting to combine flat-water freestyle with the reef wave, as well as improvers in the sheltered lagoon.

Insider tips
Practise in the flat lagoon water; the wave waits outside on the reef edge. Pointe d'Esny, with its large, clear lagoon, is well suited to improvers too, so watch the reef.
⚠︎ Hazards
Sharp coral reef on the outer edge, so booties are recommended and keep an eye on depth. The side-onshore trade is forgiving, but powerful waves break over the reef.
