About this spot

Bensersiel is first and foremost the ferry harbour for Langeoog, but in the right conditions it works as a straightforward Wadden Sea spot. At high water there is plenty of water over the flats; at low water the area dries out far. You rig and launch on the beach or grassed area and ride out on the flooded Wadden flat inside the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park.

The main wind is W, NW and SW; on the incoming tide the surface is often smooth, with chop building towards high water. The spot is tide-dependent and best ridden in the window around high water – check the tide table first. Is Bensersiel worth it? For a quiet session, yes; if you want more buzz and schools, take the ferry across to Langeoog. Season April to October, ideal for beginners and intermediates.

Insider tips

The Langeoog ferry leaves from the same harbour – easy to take gear across for an island session. Best tidal window around high water.

⚠︎ Hazards

Mind the tide, ferry traffic and tidal channels. Keep the ferry safety zones clear; the Watt dries out at low water.
