About this spot
Spiekeroog is car-free – an island railway runs instead of cars – and offers the finest sand plus two quite different areas. West of the main beach lies the designated surfer zone: swell breaks over three sandbanks, and on strong days the waves run mast-high. At the western end (Sturmeck) an offshore sandbank forms a kilometre-wide, flat practice area, where a kite school (Old Laramie/Windloop) has its base. You rig and launch on the beach; the Nordstrand may be ridden from three hours after sunrise.
The main wind is W, NW and SW, and the wave runs best in NW. What does Spiekeroog offer kiters? Flatwater for practice at the western end and real North Sea wave off the main beach – with far less crowding than on the big islands. Season April to October, good from beginners to intermediates.

Insider tips
Flatwater for practice at the western end (Sturmeck) over the sandbank, wave in the surfer zone west of the main beach. Nordstrand from three hours after sunrise.
⚠︎ Hazards
Strong currents at the western end, especially around the turn of the tide. It gets deep quickly once the sandbank is covered; mind the tidal channels.
