About this spot
Wangerooge is car-free and reached by ferry and island railway – a quiet, rugged North Sea trip away from the crowds. It has two faces: on the sea side, with the wide West End beach, the island sits in the westwind zone and the wind comes sideshore from the left. West is ideal for jumping and wave riding; after several days of wind a nice swell builds and the beach shorebreak can get demanding.
On the Wadden side you stand in shallow, current-free water – here you surf for two to three hours around high tide in wind-driven chop, with almost any wind direction working. Ideal for anyone who finds the sea side too rough. VDWS certification for kite, windsurf and catamaran is available on the island.

Insider tips
Travel by ferry and island railway – plan gear transport carefully. If the sea-side shorebreak is too much, switch to the calm Wadden side and use the high-water window.
⚠︎ Hazards
The Wadden side is tide-dependent: only go out in the high-water window, otherwise the flats fall dry. Tidal current runs parallel to the beach. Sea-side shorebreak in storms.
