About this spot
Harlesiel is the ferry harbour for Wangerooge and at the same time one of the more reliable mainland spots on the East Frisian North Sea. You ride inside the official kite zone in the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park (UNESCO World Heritage), in a window from three and a half hours before to three and a half hours after high water – a touch longer than at the neighbouring -siel spots. Rig and launch on the beach or by the groyne north of the harbour; you ride out on the flooded Wadden flats.
In W, NW and SW winds the breeze comes in cleanly across open sea; on the incoming tide the water is often mirror-smooth, turning choppier around high water. When can you kite at Harlesiel? Always in the tidal window around the flood – keep the tide table in view and there is plenty of room. Season April to October. Suits beginners and intermediates who want to skip the island crossing.
