About this spot
Buen Hombre is a rustic fishing village on the remote northwest coast of the Dominican Republic in Monte Cristi province, surrounded by mountains and barely touched by tourism. An offshore reef shelters a wide, shallow lagoon from the ocean swell; behind it a clean wave breaks over the reef – the original alternative to Cabarete.
The wind is the easterly to northeasterly trade, standing side-onshore across the lagoon. When is the best time for Buen Hombre? Wind blows virtually year-round, most reliably from January to August; the strongest phase is summer (June to September) with averages of 25 to 35 knots. The sheltered flat water suits improvers and freestyle, while the reef wave is for experienced wave kiters and wingfoilers. A venue for anyone seeking secluded, undeveloped conditions.

Insider tips
Use the sheltered lagoon behind the reef for learning and freestyle; the wave breaks outside over the reef edge. Bring all your gear – the village is rustic and remote.
⚠︎ Hazards
The wave breaks over the reef, so booties and wave experience are needed. In summer the trade builds to 25 to 35 knots; remote location with limited infrastructure.
