About this spot
Cabo de la Vela is a remote Wayúu village on the Guajira peninsula at the Caribbean northern tip of Colombia. In a desert-like landscape, the north-easterly trade wind meets butter-flat, warm water (25–28 °C) – a freestyle classic. In the main season from December to April the wind blows a solid 20–30 knots, often best in the afternoon. In the morning it tends to come from the south-east and gusty, then around midday it turns north-east and grows stronger and steadier – ideal for learning.
When is the best time to visit Cabo de la Vela? December to April delivers the strongest and steadiest wind; it goes light mainly in October and November. The flat water suits beginners and freestylers alike. Given the remoteness, it is worth travelling with local guidance.
