About this spot

Isla Blanca lies north of Cancún on a narrow spit of the Yucatán peninsula, about 25 minutes from downtown. Between the Caribbean and the Laguna Chacmuchuk runs a sheltered flat-water channel: waist-deep, sandy water for kilometres, mirror-smooth or lightly choppy depending on wind direction. The easterly trade blows cross-onshore, typically 15–25 knots.

The lagoon is smoothest in offshore east to southeast wind; on north and northeast days some chop builds. The season runs November to May, most reliable December to April, when the trade known locally as "El Norte" brings its strongest spells of 25–35 knots in December and January. When is the best time to visit Isla Blanca? December to April for the most consistent wind-and-flat-water combination. The standing-depth water makes the spot ideal for beginners as well as freestylers polishing tricks on the flat.

Location

Insider tips

East and southeast wind is offshore and makes the lagoon smoothest – the best conditions for tricks. Many days are on the lighter side, so pack bigger kites too; the strong "El Norte" days mostly fall in December/January. Standing-depth water over long stretches – relaxed for learning.

⚠︎ Hazards

In offshore east/southeast wind you drift onto the open lagoon – keep gear sound and don't go too far alone. The spit is remote with limited assistance. Seagrass and occasional sargassum on the Caribbean beach.
