Cabarete – Kite Beach

About this spot
Kite Beach lies on the north coast of the Dominican Republic, just west of the town of Cabarete – one of the pioneering locations of kitesurfing. In summer the steady easterly trade wind is boosted by a strong afternoon thermal: as the land heats up, the wind pushes side-onshore onto the bay from around midday and peaks in the late afternoon. The water is choppy, with a reef offshore that keeps the bigger swell out. Kite Beach and neighbouring Bozo Beach are the main spots.
When is the best time to visit Cabarete? The strongest, most consistent season runs June to September, when trades and thermal together often produce 20–25 knots. It also blows regularly from December to April, then more in the 15–18 knot range. With around 250–300 wind days a year, the spot suits beginners and advanced riders alike.
Location
Insider tips
The wind comes in the afternoon – mornings are often quiet, the thermal kicks in around 1 pm and peaks near 4 pm. In 20–25 knots of summer thermal, an 8–10 m kite usually suits riders around 75–80 kg. For flatter water, ride in the lee of the reef.
⚠︎ Hazards
Offshore reef: at low water and near the reef edge watch for sharp coral and shallows – booties are recommended. On windy afternoons the tight bay gets crowded, so respect right-of-way rules and keep clear of students. The chop demands a solid water start.
