Cumbuco
Brazil · Kitesurf · Wingfoil
About this spot
Coastal town around 35–40 km northwest of Fortaleza in the state of Ceará – one of the most-booked kite travel spots in the world. In the dry season the easterly trade wind (the Alisios) blows almost daily and all day at a steady 15–25 knots, often on 80% of days; the warm dunes reinforce the wind thermally. Out front is wind-chopped sea, and downwinders run for kilometres over the dunes north to the Cauípe Lagoon, a flat freestyle and beginner dream.
When is the best time to visit Cumbuco? July to January, with August to October the windiest phase. Suits beginners to pros and wingfoilers.

Insider tips
The famous downwinder to the Cauípe Lagoon is worth it – the flat water and standing areas there are ideal for freestyle and beginners. A mid-to-large kite suits many at 15–25 knots. The trade often builds further in the afternoon.
⚠︎ Hazards
Chop and at times waves out front; on downwinders factor in current and distance and do not ride alone. Watch for buggies and beach traffic when launching.
