La Barrosa – Chiclana
Spain · Kitesurf · Windsurf · Wingfoil
About this spot
La Barrosa lies about 20 kilometres south of Cádiz, near Sancti Petri, a vast Atlantic beach with a sandy bottom on the Costa de la Luz. Two winds define the spot: the westerly Poniente blows onshore and makes La Barrosa the main venue, with plenty of space and a little swell; the easterly Levante is offshore and is ridden mostly at neighbouring Sancti Petri and only by experienced riders.
The water is open Atlantic with a sandy bottom and chop, with clean lined-up waves on Poniente. When is it busiest? In summer – but kitesurfing at La Barrosa and Sancti Petri is then heavily restricted to closed, so spring and autumn deliver the most relaxed sessions. It suits beginners and intermediates; with Levante it becomes considerably more demanding.

Insider tips
Poniente (west) is the reliable, safe onshore wind for La Barrosa. Check the seasonal closures before travelling – in high summer kiting on the beach is often banned.
⚠︎ Hazards
Levante (east) is offshore and for experts only – without support you drift out into the Atlantic. In summer swimming zones and kite bans apply.
